Medical Marijuana Advocates at the State Capitol

A couple dozen supporters of the state’s voter approved medical marijuana law rally at the state capitol to voice their opposition to Representative John Kavanagh’s bill to put a repeal of the law before voters in November.

Pot advocate Eric Johnson says lawmakers need to realize that, after being approved by voters three times, legal and safe medical marijuana is the will of the people and that should be respected.

Kavanagh, a former cop from New  York, says voters were tricked into approving medical marijuana and that every medical authority agrees that it is not a safe and effective drug for anything.

Kavanagh wants voters to get a second chance to vote down the law in the wake of recent reports that many minors say they are getting pot from medical marijuana cardholders who are authorized by the Arizona Department of Health Services to use, possess and grow the drug if not near a dispensary.

Various law enforcement agencies, including the Attorney General’s Office and The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office have sought to make end-runs on the law, through zoning restrictions and questions about federal prosecution of state employees who implement the new law but have lost each time in court.
